Having Fun with Measures

This week in numeracy Year One have been concentrating on Measures, specifically weight. The children have really enjoyed the topic and we were able to do lots of hands-on, practical work which is something I always try and implement in my classroom.

We made spring balances to use for a whole class activity. The children first held an orange in their hands and then we put in it the first spring balance. The children had to estimate how many marbles would make the second spring balance weigh the same as the first. Then one child came up to measure.

On another day I set up weighing stations for the children. They had to move from station to station balancing different objects using various non-standard units of measurement.
