Our first topic of the year was Toys. I thought what better way to ease the children gently into the transition from Reception to Year One than to have them bring their favourite toys into school. The children learned a lot from this topic and really enjoyed the various activities.
We carried out pre-unit assessments before we started the topic to find out what the children already knew.
Year One carried out a survey in the school to find about how the toys children play with change as they get older. They went, with their clipboards and pencils, around to some different classes and asked them what kind of toys they like to play with.
The children compared toys used at different ages and made a ‘Toys Timeline’ to show the progression of the toys children play with.
At the end of the unit we assessed what the children had learned about toys.
